DESCRIPTION AND APPLICATION for 2012
The Zeta Omicron Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated is pleased to sponsor its 2012 Scholarship Program. Our scholarship program is a fund at The Philadelphia Foundation. Seated in the heart of North Philadelphia, Zeta Omicron Lambda has been serving the Philadelphia community for over 50 years.
Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African-American men, was founded in 1906 on the campus of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven young college men. The Founders and early leaders of the Fraternity succeeded in laying a firm foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha's principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity.
Some prominent members of Alpha Phi Alpha include: W.E.B. DuBois, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., Edward Brooke, Martin Luther King, Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Andrew Young, William Gray, Paul Robeson, Dr. Cornel West, Chaka Fattah, Kenon Ivory Wayans and Dhani Jones.
Today, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity continues to be one of the most influential black organizations in the world-with over 150,000 members initiated since its inception. There are now over 500 chapters in North America, Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, and Asia. Currently, the Torch of Enlightment, Scholarship, and Brotherhood is still carried by the Members of this most illustrious fraternity. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was the first and remains the very heart and soul of Black Greek Letter Organizations worldwide.
